Wolves Lose @ Global Studies
The Wolves, who came off of their best game of the season on December 17th against the Dr. Susan S Mckinney School of Art faced Global Studies on the road on December 19th. Last season, the Wolves were beaten by Global Studies in both meetings-- one win by more than 20. With revamped goals the Grand Street Campus Wolves looked for a win before the holiday break.
The Wolves started out a little unenthusiastic but received some scoring inside from Lawahn Lewis, who didn't quite look himself this game finishing with a season low 7 points. GSC allowed S Kyle Giddings who averages around 17 points and 13 rebounds a game, to take advantage of their lackadaisical play by scoring and even getting a block. The Wolves back to back turnovers and missed rebounds, reflected their inability to step up and play. Grand Street's Anthony Deese gave them some hope as he stepped up in sharing the ball. The first quarter ended with Global Studies leading 14-13. Lawahn Lewis continued to struggle in the second quarter-- missing lay-ups and free throws which was very uncharacteristic of him. The Wolves kept the game close, with some scoring from Tarik Allicock who found his way over the Giddings in the second. Global Studies' Kevin Davis JR. found his way inside finishing with 10 points to end the half. The final at the half was 30-27 Global Studies. At half time Coach Sharpe said that to improve the Wolves needed to "hit free-throws and start playing their style”. He also said that to protect their guards who were in sticky foul situations, they would convert to playing zone defense.
Joel Banton who had 4 points in the half, got the Wolves started in the 3rd quarter. The Wolves were able to tie the game at 36 with a 3 from Anthony Deese and better defense. Banton become more vocal letting his teammates know that what they needed were stops. Tarik Allicock's block on Giddings acted as a catalyst for the Wolves offense as they took a 47-44 lead with 1:30 left in the third. Global managed to score putting them only down by one 47-46 to end the third. In the fourth quarter GSC's lead quickly diminished as Kevin Davis hit a 3 with 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Despite scoring from Joel Banton, the Wolves just couldn't knock down their free-throws which made it harder for them to climb back. As the game continued and the score stayed close, Coach Sharpe became aggravated at the missed calls on Global as Lawahn Lewis received many hits during the game. With about 3 minutes left Coach Sharpe received a technical foul for yelling at the ref for another missed call. The trip to the line gave Global an one point advantage but even with a huge block on Joel Banton, the Wolves
maintained hope after Banton came right back and took a charge. Unfortunately, the Wolves just couldn't pull this win out, as the game ended with GSC turning the ball over after a bad pass on an inbounds play. The final score was 67-64. The Wolves now 4-2 will head back home to play the Harry Van Arsdale Cardinals on January 4th, 2013. Global Studies (3-3) will play Benjamin Banneker also on the 4th.

Grand Street Campus vs Benjamin Banneker
"Each game we're getting better at communicating you see guys speaking to each other during timeouts and in the game" - Coach Sharpe. The Grand Street Campus Wolves played one of the highest ranked teams in the Brooklyn A West, the Benjamin Banneker Warriors on Wednesday, December 12th in their 2nd home game. The stage was set for a big game with both teams coming in undefeated. Before the game Coach Sharpe spoke highly of Banneker's Head Coach Wendell Saunders, saying that "Banneker is always well prepared because they are well coached".
The Wolves looked slow to start the game falling into a 0-6 deficit against Banneker as Coach Sharpe emphatically told his players to "wake up". Banneker in the first few minutes, managed to get second chance points as GSC failed to rebound. Lawahn Lewis broke the stagnant scoring stretch 3 minutes into the game will a 3. After the streak was broken, GSC was able to continue scoring inside the paint with contributions from Joel Banton who has proven himself to be a threat with his ability to knock down threes and score in the paint. The Wolves began to look more alive towards the end of the first with a steal from Lewis and a block from Tarik Allicock which revved up their enthusiasm. Banneker who shared the ball nicely between players Brendan Wood, Kevin Williams, and Ronald Lashley combined for 16 in the 1st quarter; the Wolves led 18-16 to end the 1st quarter. The second quarter began will some sloppy plays from both teams who turned the balled over multiple times. Both teams went back and forth exchanging buckets until about 5 minutes when neither GSC nor Banneker could score for about 2 minutes. Then, the teams were right back at it-- sharing the ball very well until the buzzer for half time rang with GSC and Banneker tied at 30.
At the half, Coach Wendell Saunders simply said that to win the game Banneker had to "play tough defense and be smart on offense". Despite multiple turnovers to start the third, GSC still competed keeping the lead within 2. The intensity picked up later in the 3rd when Coach Sharpe became enraged with what he believed were missed calls by the referees. The game continued to intensify will players fighting for loose balls and back to back scoring. GSC'S Tarik Allicock found his comfort zone-- scoring inside back to back with assist from G Anthony Deese. The third quarter ended with Grand Street leading 43-42. In the fourth quarter, Coach Sharpe's anger continued as the Wolves didn't get to the line compared to Banneker's 8 trips to the line. After Banneker missed two lay-ups mid way through the fourth the "Defense" chants began to ring across the "Wolves Den". "For these next 4 minutes we have to work hard and take care of the ball" said Coach Sharpe in an emotion filled timeout. Banneker continued to score taking a two point lead with 3 minutes to play. Lawahn Lewis who shot an air ball on a previous
play redeemed himself with a made 3 to tie the game at 54. The Wolves got a lucky break down the stretch when an offensive foul was called on Banneker with 9 seconds left. Unfortunately, GSC wasn’t able to score the 4th ended 54-54, so the game headed into overtime.
In overtime GSC continuously fed the ball to their big men Nathaniel Wyatt and Tarik Allicock inside which turned out to be highly effective. With 4 minutes left to play the Wolves lost a key player Anthony Deese to fouls-- he finished the game with a superb 11 assist and 8 rebounds. Lewis was able to sneak inside and score against many Banneker players, but Banneker wasn't ready to give up. Banneker trapped GSC every time they brought up the ball making it a little difficult for GSC. Another key player for GSC Tarik Allicock, got fouled out with about 2 minutes to play. After a great steal from Joel Banton and bucket from Nathaniel Wyatt the Wolves obtained a 2 point lead. With 13 seconds left Banneker was able to score tying the game which led to another overtime. The second overtime began with Banneker taking control jumping out to a 67-62 lead over GSC. The crowd began to silence as the Wolves couldn't find a way to score. With 47 seconds left and Banneker up by 3, GSC decided to take the intentional foul on Brendan Wood back to back times with Woods missing 3-4 free throws. The window of opportunity was still there as Lawahn Lewis was able to score inside bring GSC within 2 with 23 seconds to play. After a made free throw at the line from Banneker, Lawahn Lewis fouled out with 13 seconds to play; He ended the game with 19pts 5assist and 5 rebounds. The game closed with a made free throw from none other than Brendan Wood who also finished the game with great 15 points. The final score was 70-66.
"Guts, and hard work because both teams played well" responded Banneker's Assistant Coach Anthony Joseph when asked what Banneker
did right to win the game. Coach Sharpe after the game told his team that "it's just one loss keep your head up carry on". Despite the loss Coach Sharpe said that he was impressed with how his team never stopped fighting. Benjamin Banneker now undefeated face John Jay on Monday, December 18th and Grand Street Campus now 3-1 will have their final home game until next year also on the 18th versus the 2-2 Dr. Susan S. Mckinney School of Art.

Wolves 1st Home Game vs Automotive High School
"We motivate them !" said the cheerleader captain. The Grand Street Campus Wolves had their first game at their new look "Wolves Den" on Monday, December 10th against the Automotive High School Pistons. Automotive came off of a win over the Global Studies & International Studies (last season’s top ranked team in the Brooklyn A West), and GSC returned from a 16 point win over John Jay High School the previous Wednesday. "It's important after being away 5 straight games; the adrenaline builds their confidence" responded Coach Sharpe after being asked how important home games are to the team. There was no doubt that the cheerleaders were ready to motivate their team and the fans were ready to see their 2-0 Wolves perform.
G Lawahn Lewis was able to get inside and score in the first minute of the game. This followed by a put back and a foul from Tarik Allicock who averaged 11.5 points and 11 rebounds in the first two games of the season. The Wolves jumped out to an early 13-4 lead with 2 minutes left in the first all credit to their nagging defense which led to many steals. The second quarter started a little different with Automotive scoring three times consistently, mainly from Automotive's Sharod Harrell. After about 1 minute of play Automotive was able to cut the lead to 2 and then tie the game at 15 with free throws. Grand Street Campus was instantly impacted on defense when Sophomore G Dashawn Douglas entered the game in the second quarter. GSC was able to disrupt Automotive by forcing the ball out of bounds 3 times in one possession. The half time score was much closer than the 1st quarter's with GSC leading 20-16; Lawahn Lewis led the way with 10 points in the two quarters. Tarik Allicock who contributed 6 points and 9 rebounds was "missing easy shots inside" as Coach Sharpe put it at half time, which was something Sharpe said he'll "come around" to.
Although the score tightened up tp 22-21 early in the third, Guards Joel Banton (averaged 24.5pts in the first two games) and Lawahn Lewis continued to score, combining for 17 in the third. Not only were Lewis and Banton scoring, but also Automotive's Sharod Harrell continued to score inside. The 3rd ended with a score of 40-28. In the fourth quarter Coach Sharpe urged his team to "relax” and let the other team come to them, after the Wolves turned the ball over 3 consecutive times bring the Pistons within 8 with 6 minutes to play. Automotive's run didn't last long as the Wolves continued to score bringing the lead back up to 10. The final score was 59-49.
"I was surprised to see him play so tough against a decent Point Guard he’s so small" answered Coach Sharpe when asked about the play of Dashawn Douglas after the game. Assistant Coach James Davis of Automotive believed the reason they lost was because they "gave Grand Street too many second chances". The Grand Street Campus Wolves face one of their toughest opponents of the season the Benjamin Banneker Warriors, who finished last season 12-2, on Wednesday, December 12th at home. Coach Sharpe said "we have to be tough; have fewer turnovers and play with a higher intensity [to beat Banneker]. Automotive now 1-2 will face Bushwick Campus also on Wednesday.
Point Leader- Sharod Harrell- 20 points (Automotive HS)

GSC Wolves @ John Jay High School
The Grand Street Campus Wolves ended their season 9-5 earlier this year, with a somber 54-50 lost to the Evander Childs Campus' Tigers. With 7 players back from the 2011-12 team and 7 new players the Wolves now have a mixture of younger guys and seniors.
In their first game, GSC was able to blow out their opponents on the road at Bushwick Campus HS 82-64. Senior Joel Banton hit 6- threes in the game ending with an invigorating 26 points to push GSC over Bushwick. Their next game was Tuesday, December 4th against a John Jay squad who finished the season 5-9.
With the cheerleader’s pom poms shaking and voices echoing throughout the small gymnasium, the Grand Street Campus Wolves came out to play. The game started with a 3 from G Lawahn Lewis who spotted up from the left wing. Some sloppy play from both teams,
who turned the ball over early in the shot clock, gave way in the first few minutes. With about 4 minutes left to play GSC stepped up their defense by using the full court trap which resulted in John Jay’s turnovers. Despite the Wolves nagging
defense, G Aykel Lewis Lee was able to end the 1st with 9 points. The first quarter score was 31-18 with GSC ahead. In the second quarter, Lee dominated in the paint--zipping past the Wolves for easy baskets. With 5 turnovers in the 1st GSC Head Coach Claude Sharpe urged his players from the sidelines to "handle the ball!” As the Wolves gained some tempo in the beginning of the 2nd,
taking a 28-17 lead, John Jay took advantage of some of Grand Street’s sloppy plays and brought the lead within 6. Lewis who visited the free throw line frequently in the 2nd quarter helped GSC take a 47-33 led at the half.
"We need to rebound better; we are playing weak especially against a shorter team-- nobody's boxing out. The ball sharing is okay but we need to work on better passing" said Coach Sharpe, who wasn't too impressed by the score board. With 10 turnovers in the first half any coach who argue the same.
The sloppy passing continued into the third despite Joel Banton’s and Lawahn Lewis' contributions from behind the arc. John Jay, on one play towards the end of the 3rd, was able to grab three offensive rebounds which Coach Sharpe couldn't have been too pleased about.
The crowd simmered down briefly as the Wolves took a 61-47 lead to end the third. In the fourth, we saw some more of the same play from GSC-- no boxing out but hitting 3's. The door was shut for John Jay, even with the input of 11 points from Kevon Murphy, who actually averages a double double in points and rebounds for the first two games of the season. The final score was 72-56.
After the game Coach Sharpe responded, “We need to work on rebounding and mental toughness. The defense was average" when asked about what needed to improve and how he felt about the team's overall defense.
Grand Street Campus now 2-0 will play in their first home game of the season against Automotive High School on December 10th. Automotive HS who played the top ranked team in the Brooklyn A West last season: Global Studies previously, will continue to be tested against the GSC Wolves. Hopefully we can see improved play from the Wolves, who are "coming together" as Coach Sharpe says, on Monday.
Point Leader- Aykel Lewis Lee- 27 points (John Jay HS)

Wolves Win 62-37 over Seward Park
And here it begins the play-offs where teams are put to the test in seeing who remains on top. Enough with the jazzy talk, the Wolves faced their round one opponent the Seward Park Bears on Thursday, February 16th in the Wolves Den. Just to give a brief rundown we take a step back; the Wolves ended their regular season with a 19 point win over Automotive HS having an overall record of 9-5, the Seward Park Bears handled the HS Economics & Finance with a 27 point win giving them a record of 9-7.*ALSO, Nigel Hemingway who averaged 16 points a game last season returned to play his first game in a while with the Wolves* Both teams looked to win in this crucial play-off game where one loss equals the boot ending a team's season. Before the game I spoke to two key players for the Wolves- Jeremy Guzman (captain) and Ayoola Ogunwale (Starting PG) and I asked them how they felt about this game. "[This game is] very important it’s the playoffs but I'm ready to go we just need to have good ball movement and play defense" said Jeremy. Both seemed relatively relaxed, when I asked Ayoola about what he had to do that day he responded by saying "get my team mates going, scoring, playing defense...whatever it takes to help the team win".
The Wolves started the game with a three after the tip (which seems to be a tradition) and immediately got back on defense. Even though the game didn't start fast pace with shorts and sneakers speeding up and down the court, the Wolves did a good job of being patient in finding a good look whether it be at the basketball or behind the arc. GSC had some great defensive stops against Seward Park who looked somewhat nervous. The Bears remained close to GSC despite trailing some and pushed a 13-11 score to end the first quarter. As more fans started drifting in, the second quarter got underway and the Wolves just went off. They would force a steal and then hit a three, it was just wonderful, a once quiet crowd burst out of their shells to scream and jump in joy.
A 19-18 lead with 5 minutes left in the first half became a 28-19 lead with 2 minutes left. Before one had the chance to check the lopsided score it was half time with the Wolves leading 34-21 with much help from Nigel Hemingway, but not everyone was happy. Ask Coach Rick of the Seward Park Bears "whats wrong is that we only have 21 points you have to have at least 60 points to win a game" he said in disgust. Coach Sharpe was more or less pleased with the Wolves play "were doing a excellent job defensively on their go to guy [Lasana]" he said. Lasana Williams, team captain of the Bears, had himself a good game against HS Economics & Finance with 16 points, but he wasn't exactly having a flashback with this Wolves Team.
So we found ourselves in the 3rd quarter where two goals ran out onto the court- one to maintain the lead and the other to come from behind and win. The Wolves continued to roll and roll until they rolled into a 41-25 lead over the Bears. Then some drama broke out but not on the court, consequently everyone in the stands were forced to exit the premise in an orderly fashion. This play-off game turned into a scrimmage-style game; everything was heard, the sneakers squeaking on the hardwood, the coaches yelling "23 23 hey you gotta watch the ball", the whistles for a time out, it was interesting. The Wolves began to slack off in the fourth maybe because of the 20 point cushion they had but Coach Sharpe wasn't going to let anything happen "we look tired ! we need to wake up ! we are still in a game !" he urged his team. GSC picked up the pace with steals and fast breaks as they sailed their way into a 62-37 win over the Seward Park Bears.
Impressed with Nigel Hemingway's game as of many, I asked Coach Sharpe what Nigel's addition brings to the team especially in the play-offs he responded saying "he gives us this energy we didn't have before, he also gives us an instant spark on offense". "See, what'd I say 62 you gotta get past 60" I heard Coach Rick yell, and he was right well for this game at least. Congratulations to the Wolves for winning their first game of the play-offs, next GSC will play the Evander Childs Tigers on Tuesday, February 28th 5:00 p.m @ Evander Childs Gym. GO WOLVES !!

Wolves get a W over Secondary School Spirit
The Grand Street Campus Wolves whom had come off of a beat down from the Global Studies and International Studies, looked to get a win against the 5-7 Secondary School for Law, Journalism, and Research on Monday, January 30th, 2012. Returning to the court was Ayoola Ogunwale (the Wolves starting PG) who missed two of the Wolves last games. The Wolves hit the game running taking a quick 15-3 lead to end the first quarter with well distributed scoring between the starters.Isaiah Sylvan also gave the Wolves some spark; grabbing 6 offensive rebounds and scoring 6 points in the first half. The Spirit began to pick their game up in the second quarter getting many touches in the paint. Secondary School managed to score the same amount of points as GSC in the second quarter despite committing 10 turnovers which eight times turned into points for the Wolves. GSC took a commanding 42-18 lead over the Spirit as they came out raining threes to start the third quarter. Blocks, steals, and charges the Wolves were doing it all on the defensive end not to mention the good amount of ball movement on offense.Then...things got a little sloppy for the Wolves who turned the ball over consecutive times to start the last quarter. The Spirit went on a little serge which amp ted the crowd but it was nothing but fool’s gold since they were still down by 13. Later things didn't seem to click on the offensive end but with a couple of charges the Wolves got their momentum back partially. Finally, Ayoola Ogunwale broke the lack of scoring cycle by taking it to the rim for two. Jeremy Guzman iced the game by hitting another three putting GSC up 62-40 with a minute to play. "We played defense and executed on offense, our ball movement was a lot better than how it was in the past three games" Coach Sharpe said after the game. The Wolves now 8-5 took care of business on the road (with a final of 64-37) after a long break putting them in great position to win their last season game against the Automotive Pistons(4-8) on Friday, February 3rd, 2012. Ayoola Ogunwale scored 14 points and dished out 5 assist; welcome back! The Secondary School for Law, Journalism, and Research will look to perk their Spirits up against the Harry Van Arsdale Cardinals (6-6) also on the 3rd.

Global Studies and International Studies Blow out the Wolves
The Grand Street Campus Wolves(7-4), coming off of a win against Harry Van Arsdale securing their play-off spot, visited the hottest team in the Brooklyn A West Division the Global Studies and International Studies Jaguars(10-1) on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012.Grand Street was without their starting point guard Ayoola Ogunwale for the second consecutive game of the season. "We need to box out and do a good job defending...Nate and Isaiah" Coach Sharpe said when asked of the key players and keys to the game.
The Wolves started the game with a three-pointer from Lawahn Lewis who had 12 points in the first half. The Jaguars big men including 6ft6 Kyle Giddings and 6ft8 Arkeem Joseph towered over the Wolves giving them an advantage in the paint (the two combined for 33 on the game). As the Jaguars continued to dominate, the Wolves constantly changed players trying to find a group that could make something happen. The Jaguars took control in the second quarter outscoring the Wolves 22-7 and out rebounding them 23-9. Many couldn't help but feeling like this was a blow out in the making with a half time score of 43-20. But wait just one second there, the Wolves weren't about to give up G Jeremy Guzman came out swinging taking command over the Wolves offense while the team caused Jaguars turnovers on the defense. GSC started to gain a rhythm with a spark of energy from Nathaniel Wyatt in the third quarter;the Wolves outscored the Jaguars 22-19.
Just when things started to go right the Wolves made some costly mistakes on offensive which slowed down their tempo. The Wolves began to find themselves in a deep ditch that they didn't have time to climb out of. Continuous scoring by the Jaguars on the perimeter and in the paint made it hard for the Wolves to even hope for a comeback. Finally the anticipation of being so close but yet so far away ended with a final of 84-62.The Jaguars, cheerleaders, fans, Jaguar Mascot, and all celebrated their 11th win of the season with a blow-out. The Wolves now 7-5 look to snatch a win over the Secondary School for Law, Journalism, and Research on the road Monday January 30th, 2012. The Jaguars now 11-1 will face the Bushwick Campus Tigers(3-8) also on the 30th.

Wolves Clinch Play-off Spot
On Wednesday, January 11th, 2012 the Grand Street Campus Wolves had the opportunity to play in front of their home crowd in a must win game for the Wolves facing the Harry Van Arsdale Cardinals(5-5). GSC won in their last meeting in a low scoring game at Harry Van Arsdale Educational Campus. The Wolves started the game hot, picking the Cardinals pocket back to back times resulting in a three pointer and an easy lay-up putting the Wolves up 10-4 with five minutes in the first quarter. The Cardinals quickly caught up tying the game at 14 to end the first. The large crowd roared as the Wolves rained three's hitting five in just the second quarter. GSC's seven point run led them to a score of 38-29 to end the half. The Wolves had a nice balance of scoring with players Jeremy Guzman, Lawahn Lewis, and Joel Banton scoring 10+ points in the first half.
"When need to execute on defense and cause turnovers, we need to cause the other team to play chaotic" Coach Sharpe said when asked what they needed to do to maintain their lead. And that's what they did holding the Cardinals to 32 points with four minutes left in the third while the Wolves continued to dominate behind the arc with much help from Joel Banton who hit four threes in the 3rd and 4th quarter. The Wolves handled the Cardinals in the third quarter leading by 20 points at one point. As GSC continued to rack up points they found themselves fouling consistently, which caused much controversy between the Wolves and officials who put the Cardinals at the line four times in a row which they made 6 of; reducingtheir deficit. "OFFENSIVE FOUL!" despite missing a few shots and sending the Cardinals to the line, the Wolves found away to silence the opposing teams cheering fans by taking a charge; the coaching staff was absolutely ecstatic. Joel Banton iced the game with another 3 pointer with 1:36 seconds left in the game.
The crowd yelled in support of the Wolves bench and also sung "Hey hey hey good bye" with help from the cheerleaders while the Cardinals spent their last trip at the line. While the Wolves and Cardinals exchanged rather friendly words "good game man" and hugs, the attention quickly grew to what looked like a badly injured Wolves player Jeremy Guzman, but as the Wolves do, he got up and walked his way toward the Cardinal players to shake hands. In previous games Coach Sharpe established the fact that the Wolves needed to close out games better, this is what he had to say concerning this game "We did exactly what we need to do; we stayed focused in the last two quarters and made the other team pay when they made a mistake".
The Wolves definitely showed up and showed out with an impressive win against the Cardinals. The Wolves now 7-4 will face their toughest opponent on the road against the Global Studies and International Studies Jaguars(9-1),who have beaten Grand Street Campus by nine points in mid-December, on January 18th, 2012. The Harry Van Arsdale(5-6) will play the Dr. Susan Mckinney School of Art Kings(0-10) also on the eighteenth.

Wolves Demolish the Dr. Susan S. Mckinney Kings
After coming off a tough loss to Benjamin Banneker Academy on Friday, Grand Street needed to find a way to bounce back which was exactly what they did against the Kings at Dr. Susan S. Mckinney School of Art on Monday, January 9th, 2012. To start the game the Wolves took a 9-5 lead over the Kings, causing three turnovers early in the first. Coach Claude Sharpe encouraged his team to “box out and make good passes and good shots” in a time out. Joel Banton provided much help for the Wolves catching 5 boards and scoring most of his 14 points in the first half giving them a 47-24 lead at the half.
At half time Coach Sharpe responded saying this when asked what Wolves player he would like to see more from "I would like Nate to show up more"; Nathaniel Wyatt had only 2 points and 2 rebounds in the first half but later that changed. Although Nathaniel didn't necessarily dominate in the point’s category, he did manage to grab 5 rebounds to end the game. The crowd cheered as the Kings came out after the first, going on a slight run but other than that it was pretty...quiet, while many fans minds drifted from the game the Wolves continued to roll on in their scoring and rebounding. The Kings never did catch up by they did out score the Wolves who committed 6 turnovers in the 3rd and 4th quarters, with three within the last 2 minutes of the game. Despite not getting to the line as much as the Kings, the Wolves flat out destroyed the Kings on their home court with a final of 46-68. Joel Banton, the key factor in the Wolves win scoring 14 points, said he needed to "improve on my defense like boxing out and making hustle plays for the team".
The Wolves now 6-4 will host the Harry Van Arsdale Cardinals who sit right under GSC in the standings at 5-5 on January 11th, 2012. The win-less Dr. Susan S. Mckinney School of Art Kings will face the fiery Global Studies and International Studies(8-1) also on the 11th of January.

Game Delayed
The Grand Street Campus Wolves took on the Bushwick Academy Tigers on Wednesday, January 4th, 2012 to start the New Year. Originally a home game for the Tigers, game changes relocated the game to the Grand Street Campus Gym.The court wasn't the only change, throughout the game Grand Street Campus' shot clock gave some trouble delaying several parts of the game that was until Grand Street resorted to using the old fashion shot clock. The Tigers came out swinging taking an early 6-13 lead over the Wolves. The Tigers six-footers dominated in the paint. Wolves Head Coach urged his team in a time out to "be patient" and to "secure rebounds". Frustration. Frustrated coach and frustrated players tried to keep their cool in order to take the lead to end the first half. Although the Wolves couldn't make that happen they managed to only be down one point.
And that's five!, leading scorer for the Wolves Jeremy Guzman fouled out in the third quarter leaving the Wolves fighting in the fourth without their key man. Despite losing Jeremy, the Wolves scored their most points in the third quarter giving them a little push going into the fourth. The Wolves hit a 3 pointer followed by a block to start the fourth quarter amp-ted. Steal followed by a lay-up followed by a defensive stop had the crowd screaming at the top of their lungs, it was a now 5 point lead for the Tigers. With two minutes to go, the Wolves picked off the Tigers TWICE and forced yet another turnover with two minutes left in the game. After two made free-throws by Ayoola Ogunwale, bringing the Wolves within one point, the Wolves found themselves at the line again.Lawahn Lewis could have gave Grand Street the lead but instead tied the game with 13 seconds left. BOO'S, BANGING, and BATTERING the Tigers point guard heard it from the crowd as he stood at the line shooting two. Both in.Straight net with eleven seconds left. The Wolves missed their next shot and time expired. But then the whole Wolves bench screamed in anger "I called a time out man!...he called a time out!" The referees didn't want to hear it, the period was finished and the Wolves had to take the loss to a Bushwick team coming in 2-4.
Manager/Assistant Coach Mersed had this to say after the game "we need to play four quarters we can't just try to play catch-up...the way we played in the end is how we should have been playing the whole game". It seems as though the Wolves game was well...delayed. Hopefully they get their shields up fast as they face a tough opponent the Benjamin Banneker Academy Warriors(5-1) on Friday, January 6th, 2012. Bushwick Academy will play the also 3-4 Automotive Pistons on Friday.
