The Grand Street Campus Wolves(7-4), coming off of a win against Harry Van Arsdale securing their play-off spot, visited the hottest team in the Brooklyn A West Division the Global Studies and International Studies Jaguars(10-1) on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012.Grand Street was without their starting point guard Ayoola Ogunwale for the second consecutive game of the season. "We need to box out and do a good job defending...Nate and Isaiah" Coach Sharpe said when asked of the key players and keys to the game.
The Wolves started the game with a three-pointer from Lawahn Lewis who had 12 points in the first half. The Jaguars big men including 6ft6 Kyle Giddings and 6ft8 Arkeem Joseph towered over the Wolves giving them an advantage in the paint (the two combined for 33 on the game). As the Jaguars continued to dominate, the Wolves constantly changed players trying to find a group that could make something happen. The Jaguars took control in the second quarter outscoring the Wolves 22-7 and out rebounding them 23-9. Many couldn't help but feeling like this was a blow out in the making with a half time score of 43-20. But wait just one second there, the Wolves weren't about to give up G Jeremy Guzman came out swinging taking command over the Wolves offense while the team caused Jaguars turnovers on the defense. GSC started to gain a rhythm with a spark of energy from Nathaniel Wyatt in the third quarter;the Wolves outscored the Jaguars 22-19.
Just when things started to go right the Wolves made some costly mistakes on offensive which slowed down their tempo. The Wolves began to find themselves in a deep ditch that they didn't have time to climb out of. Continuous scoring by the Jaguars on the perimeter and in the paint made it hard for the Wolves to even hope for a comeback. Finally the anticipation of being so close but yet so far away ended with a final of 84-62.The Jaguars, cheerleaders, fans, Jaguar Mascot, and all celebrated their 11th win of the season with a blow-out. The Wolves now 7-5 look to snatch a win over the Secondary School for Law, Journalism, and Research on the road Monday January 30th, 2012. The Jaguars now 11-1 will face the Bushwick Campus Tigers(3-8) also on the 30th.
