The Grand Street Campus Wolves took on the Bushwick Academy Tigers on Wednesday, January 4th, 2012 to start the New Year. Originally a home game for the Tigers, game changes relocated the game to the Grand Street Campus Gym.The court wasn't the only change, throughout the game Grand Street Campus' shot clock gave some trouble delaying several parts of the game that was until Grand Street resorted to using the old fashion shot clock. The Tigers came out swinging taking an early 6-13 lead over the Wolves. The Tigers six-footers dominated in the paint. Wolves Head Coach urged his team in a time out to "be patient" and to "secure rebounds". Frustration. Frustrated coach and frustrated players tried to keep their cool in order to take the lead to end the first half. Although the Wolves couldn't make that happen they managed to only be down one point.
And that's five!, leading scorer for the Wolves Jeremy Guzman fouled out in the third quarter leaving the Wolves fighting in the fourth without their key man. Despite losing Jeremy, the Wolves scored their most points in the third quarter giving them a little push going into the fourth. The Wolves hit a 3 pointer followed by a block to start the fourth quarter amp-ted. Steal followed by a lay-up followed by a defensive stop had the crowd screaming at the top of their lungs, it was a now 5 point lead for the Tigers. With two minutes to go, the Wolves picked off the Tigers TWICE and forced yet another turnover with two minutes left in the game. After two made free-throws by Ayoola Ogunwale, bringing the Wolves within one point, the Wolves found themselves at the line again.Lawahn Lewis could have gave Grand Street the lead but instead tied the game with 13 seconds left. BOO'S, BANGING, and BATTERING the Tigers point guard heard it from the crowd as he stood at the line shooting two. Both in.Straight net with eleven seconds left. The Wolves missed their next shot and time expired. But then the whole Wolves bench screamed in anger "I called a time out man!...he called a time out!" The referees didn't want to hear it, the period was finished and the Wolves had to take the loss to a Bushwick team coming in 2-4.
Manager/Assistant Coach Mersed had this to say after the game "we need to play four quarters we can't just try to play catch-up...the way we played in the end is how we should have been playing the whole game". It seems as though the Wolves game was well...delayed. Hopefully they get their shields up fast as they face a tough opponent the Benjamin Banneker Academy Warriors(5-1) on Friday, January 6th, 2012. Bushwick Academy will play the also 3-4 Automotive Pistons on Friday.
Leading Scorer: Ayoola Ogunawale 15 points
